Urgent Need: a Matter of Life and Death In rural Rwanda, even a simple fever or childbirth complication can turn deadly without immediate medical care. This is a pressing, daily reality for millions, where healthcare is a distant dream due to cost. While many of us take health insurance for granted, it's a lifeline in Rwanda—often the difference between life and death.
The Healthcare Struggle in Rural Rwanda Despite progress, rural Rwanda still struggles with limited healthcare access. Over 70% of the population lives in rural areas, where many families can't afford basic care. Without health insurance, even minor illnesses can push families deeper into poverty, forcing them to choose between food and medicine. This is not a problem we can afford to ignore.
The government's Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI) program offers affordable healthcare for a small fee, but for many, even that's too much. Over 20% of the population still lacks coverage, leaving them vulnerable to preventable diseases and emergencies.
The Cost of Health Insurance For just $6 per person per year, Rwandans can access vital healthcare services, including consultations and emergency care. While small to many of us, this cost is a significant burden for families living on less than $1.90 a day.
During a visit to a village in Rwanda, we met a family who couldn't afford health insurance. We paid $18 for them to get coverage for a year. Just weeks later, a sickness swept through the village, but because they were insured, they were able to get treated—saving lives, including that of a newborn baby. Imagine if this was your family, child, or loved one. Your donation can make a difference in their lives.
The Ripple Effect of Health Insurance Health insurance not only saves lives but also brings lasting benefits, creating a brighter future for Rwandan families. It ensures better health, economic stability, and educational opportunities, making your support crucial for their well-being and a beacon of hope in their lives.
Better Health: Families with insurance seek medical care early, preventing minor issues from becoming severe. Children receive vaccinations and check-ups, reducing child mortality.
Economic Stability: Insurance is not just about health, it's about financial security. It protects families from substantial medical bills, helping them save and invest in their future.
Educational Benefits: Healthy children can attend school, and insured families miss less work due to illness, creating more stable incomes.
Community Growth: Healthier people contribute more to their communities, strengthening local economies and social structures.
Statistics that Speak Volumes
Over 80% of Rwandans have enrolled in CBHI, but many in the poorest areas still lack coverage.
Healthcare costs push 150 million people globally into extreme poverty each year, especially in low-income countries like Rwanda.
